● 평창 연혁.

고구려때에는 '욱오현'불렸습니다. 신라 때 '백오'로 고쳤고, 고려 때에 '평창'으로 명칭이 바뀌었습니다.

원래는 원주에 속해 예속되있었습니다. 1392년(조선 태조1)에 군이 되었습니다. 한때는 '충주부'에 속하다가 1896년에 강원도로 편입되었습니다.

● 평창 지형.

붉은 선이 태백산맥입니다. 평창은 태백 산맥 가운데에 위치하였습니다. 전체적으로 높은 산간 지역을 이이룹니다. 하지만 남한강의 지류가 흘러 그 유역에 약간의 평지가 펼쳐져 있습니다.

● 평창 기후.

평창은 내륙 고원 지대에 위치하여 여름이 짧고, 대륙성 기후를 나타냅니다.

대륙성 기후란 겨울에 건조하고 습도가 낮아서 매우 춥게 느껴지며, 여름엔 소나기형 비가 잦고 기온이 높습니다.

● 평창 산업.

주산업은 농업과 목축업입니다. 대관령 일대에서 고랭지 농업을 비롯하여 한우, 젖소 등의 기업적 목축이 이루어집니다. 지하 자원으로 금, 은, 석탄, 텅스텐, 몰리브덴 등이 산출된다고 합니다.
